From left to right :- Sevant, Suraiya’s grandmother, Suraiya, Suraiya’s mom and Suraiya’s cousin.

This rare family pic shows Suraiya’s infamous granny who played a major role in ending the love affair of Suraiya with Dev Anand. According to Dev Anand in his book Romancing with Life – an autobiography, he mentioned “Suraiya’s grandmother’s open resentment came to the fore one day, on the sets of Afsar. She started monitoring our movements on the set, making sure that the lovers did not get an opportunity to communicate with each other, except to speak and perform the lines required of them in the scenes. She also forbade any physical contact between us in any scene to be shot”.

Later Dev found out that “there was a severe rift in Suraiya’s family, nobody taking her side on the issue of her personal emotional involvement except her mother. If she chose to go against the wishes of the family, either she would be eliminated, or the granny would kill herself. Apparently, Suraiya had wept and wept and finally yielded to the pressure mounting on her.” – Mister Jinx

  1. ITS NOT A GOOD MANNER TO SPEAK ILL OF THE DEAD!
DEV ANAND SAID THAT SURAIYA MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR HIM!
EVEN THOUGH THE GRANNY WAS MEAN TO DEV AND IT WAS WRONG TO DO SO ,BUT SHE DID WHAT SHE KNEW WAS RIGHT,AS A MUSLIM WOMAN SHOULD NOT MARRY A NON MUSLIM.THE GRANNY WAS WELL RESPECTED AND SHE WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO MADE THE DECITION,OTHER SURAIYA’S FAMILY MEMBERS DID AS WELL.
SURAIYA WAS ABLE TO MARRY LIKE DED AND LIVE HAPPY AS HE WAS.
REST IN PEACE SURAYIYA AND YOUR GRANNY.

  2. Nina I disagree with your comment – why shouldn’t different religions intermarry??? The granny had no right to interfere. However I do understand society was different In those days.
