But we can't take emotions into account when writing these profiles. Naseem Akhtar, Hamida Bano etc were nowhere near the top as playback singers. The topmost slot was occupied by Zohra Bai, then by Shamshad Begum and then Geeta Roy and Lata Mangeshkar came to displace them. Of course many of these 2nd and 3rd tier singers including Hamida, Lalita, Naseem Akhtar and many others sang few immortal songs in their careers, but they were nowhere near the top. Actually, not moderately successful but top - both among audiences as well as composers, from 1944. She sang only a couple of songs in 1943. She debuted with the Pagli (1943) trio, composed by Rashid Attre Jehan Ji, Pandit Gobindram Ji, Ustad Jhande Khan Ji and Amir Ali Ji - Piye Ja Piye Ja Piye Ja Piye Ja. This was sung with Shamshad Begum Ji (a very early song of this stalwart) and S. D. Batish Ji. She was among the cast and appeared just for this song. Her unique, beautiful voice in the line "Shab-O-Roz-E-Lutf-E-Jawani Piye Ja" caught the attention of all. One of my favourite singers, thanks for her photo.
