Hamida Bano
Hamid Bano was moderately successful singer of the pre-partition era. Before migrating to Pakistan, her repertoire included memorable songs like Teri zaat pak hai ai Khuda (Neik Perveen,1946) and Champa kali hai udaas (Cheen le Azaadi, 1947). Her duets with Mukesh – Ja parwane ja kahin shama jal rahie hai (Rajputani,1946) and Badariya baras gayi us paar (Moorti, 1945 with Khursheed Begum) are still remembered by serious music buffs. It is ironic that she died unsung in Lahore on November 9th, 2006. She is survived by her son, Arshad – Ummer Siddique

One of my favourite singers, thanks for her photo. Actually, not moderately successful but top – both among audiences as well as composers, from 1944. She sang only a couple of songs in 1943. She debuted with the Pagli (1943) trio, composed by Rashid Attre Jehan Ji, Pandit Gobindram Ji, Ustad Jhande Khan Ji and Amir Ali Ji – Piye Ja Piye Ja Piye Ja Piye Ja. This was sung with Shamshad Begum Ji (a very early song of this stalwart) and S. D. Batish Ji. She was among the cast and appeared just for this song. Her unique, beautiful voice in the line “Shab-O-Roz-E-Lutf-E-Jawani Piye Ja” caught the attention of all.
Of course Vidur… for you every singer from the 30s and 40s was a “top” singer lol! But we can’t take emotions into account when writing these profiles. Naseem Akhtar, Hamida Bano etc were nowhere near the top as playback singers. The topmost slot was occupied by Zohra Bai, then by Shamshad Begum and then Geeta Roy and Lata Mangeshkar came to displace them. Of course many of these 2nd and 3rd tier singers including Hamida, Lalita, Naseem Akhtar and many others sang few immortal songs in their careers, but they were nowhere near the top.
