Jabeen

Newcomer Jabeen, who has roles in “Badshah Salamat” and other films, remembers the day she shut herself up in the make-up room for two hours. It was on her very first day in films.

She was working in “Guzara.” She had finished making-up and was ready in less than half an hour. Before going to Producer-director S. M. Yusuf for his okay, she made sure from others that her make-up was all right. Then she went to Mr. Yusuf.

The director, seeing the young actress coming out of the make-up room sooner than he expected, looked worried and he said, “Your make-up is not quite what I want. Improve it.”

Jabeen returned to the make-up man, but was told, “Directors are apt to reject any­thing at first sight. You just stay in your room for some time and then report to Mr. Yusuf. He’ll okay you then.”

So Jabeen shut herself up in the stuffy little make-up room for two hours! But her self-imposed confinement was rewarded.

Producer-director Yusuf promptly okayed her make-up when she reported for duty after the two-hour stretch of boredom! (Source – Filmfare Magazine, 1955)

Usha Kiron and Nirupa Roy

The belle from Gujerat and the beauty from Maharashtra often get together at Filmland parties and invariably a chatty gossip session ensues. As “Filmfare” award-win­ner Usha Kiron jabs a finger at Nirupa, she seems almost to say, “And that is what I told her, but she just wouldn’t … !” Or perhaps Usha said, “Look, Nirupaben, I’ve work­ed in Gujerati pictures, and you should act in some Marathi ones!” But, whatever it is that Usha says so animatedly, these two charming young women are never at a loss for subjects to discuss! – August 1955

Yet another screenland romance has blossomed — this time on the sets of Filmistan’s international venture, “Three- Headed Cobra” (earlier titled “Bombay Flight 417″). The young and lovely Vinita Butt who made her screen debut in “Mr. and Mrs. ’55″ and who is making a bid for stardom in this ambitious inter­national film, is engaged to popular make­up man, Jimmy Vining, also on the staff of this production.

Roopmala, the popular actress who celebrated her birthday on January 7th, 1956

On January 7th 1956, Roopmala celebrated her birthday quietly. There was no cake, no candles and no guests. But the servants were given a holiday, the star’s parents and beautiful sister attending to things.

The reason was news of a family bereavement in Pakistan which arrived a day before.

Poornima

It’s moonsoon-time in Movie-land but time (and the industry) waits for nobody and nothing – not even the rains! Producers raced against time to get their outdoor shooting done before umbrellas became the order of the day. But sitting quietly, in one corner of the huge outdoor set of the film in which she currently stars, was the petite Poornima who, when the rains added a wet sequence to the film, raised a handy umbrella over her head and continued to sit right where she was, instead of racing for shelter – August 1955
