Miscellaneous Info - Fatma Begum was probably the first woman director of India. She married the Nawab of Sachin and was the mother of silent superstars Sultana, Shahzadi and Zubaida (leading lady of India’s first talkie Alam Ara [1931]). She started her career on Urdu stage, then became film actress in Ardeshir Irani’s Star Films Veer Abhimanyu (1922). She set up Fatma Film Corporation in 1926 (later known as Victoria Fatma Film Coporation) and directed Bulbul-e-Paristan, thus becoming the first female director of India. Fatma possessed a strong will and vision. She divorced her husband when he did not approve of her career on stage and film and groomed her daughters Shahzadi, Sultana, and Zubeida for a career in films. She continued working as an actress at Kohinoor and Imperial Studios while producing, writing and directing (often also acting in) her own films at the Fatma Coporation. After the arrival of sound in 1931, she continued acting in the 30s, e.g. for Nanubhai Vakil and Homi Master.
