Chhaya (1961) – Review

Hrishikes Mukherjee’s latest directorial vehicle “Chhaya” (Shadow) is a mere shadow of his earlier films, “Musafir,” “Anadi,” “Mem Didi” and “Anuradha.”

The story, which centers on an adopted child and her mother who keeps their relationship a closely-guarded secret, is only a variant of an old theme. But in order to invest the film with a dramatic climax, a sequence which resembles one in “Yukiwarisoo” is woven into it. In an attempt to achieve box-office success at any cost, the director has even made leading man Sunil Dutt run faster than a railway train to save Nirupa Roy from committing suicide!

It is reported that the film has done well in several centers. With its witty, terse dialogue, emotional lyrics and good performances, “Chhaya” certainly has the power to titillate the average cinemagoer.

Nirupa Roy as the mother, Sunil Dutt as the poet and Asha Parekh as the daughter do full justice to their roles.
